Pharr City Commission Report

The Board of Commissioners of the City of Pharr met for its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, April 17, 2017, and considered an agenda that included the following highlights:

Pharr Recognizes Firefighter Jose J. Perez For Being Awarded Firefighter of the Yea

 

Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D., and City of Pharr officials congratulated Jose J. Perez for receiving the Firefighter of the Year Award from the Rio Grande Valley Firefighters and Fire Marshal’s Association, received one of the highest local recognitions in his field of service. The regional association is comprised of which comprised of 37 fire departments from Zapata to Cameron counties. Perez, a Marine who served and was injured in the Iraq war, has honorably served the Pharr Fire Department for eight consecutive years. The award is based on five criteria, including attitude and work knowledge; creativity, ability and innovation; department involvement; community involvement; and heroism/bravery. Perez consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty. Aside from performing his duties as a firefighter, Perez is also a certified electrician, and recently helped a fire victim bring their home into compliance after a major fire damaged their electrical wiring – at no cost to the family.  Also, he organized boxing exercises for physical fitness training and has participated as a boxing coach for Pharr’s PAL program. Perez deserves the recognition bestowed upon him, and Pharr is proud to have him as an employee here in Pharr.

Pharr Awarded $1.5 Million from MPO for the PSJA Tri-City Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project

City manager Juan Guerra announced the successful funding award of more than $1.5 million from the Hidalgo County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the PSJA Tri-City Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project under the Transportation Alternatives Program. The project is a collaboration between the City of Pharr, the City of San Juan, the City of Alamo, and the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District, and will provide pedestrian safety by proposing safe routes to surrounding PSJA ISD schools while improving connections between the tri-city area. The project will extend sidewalks to encourage the use of alternative transportation by providing a safe haven for pedestrians and bicyclists, which will, in turn, improve the health and safety of students and residents.

Pharr Awarded $134,000 from MPO for Pedestrian Safety and Wellness Plan

City manager Juan Guerra announced the awarding of $134,000 from the Hidalgo County Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Pharr Comprehensive Pedestrian Safety and Wellness Plan. The funding is through the Transportation Alternatives Program, and requires a local match from the City in the amount of $120,000.

Learn to Swim Registration – April 22 at 8 am
Open registration for swimming lessons at The Pharr Aquatic Center begins at 8 am this Saturday, April 22nd. Head to the Pharr Parks and Recreation Department’s website at http://pharr-tx.gov/departments/parks-recreation/ to register, or stop by the Parks and Recreation office at 413 E. Clark. Earth Day Event – April 22 at 9 am

The ARISE youth group is hosting an Earth Day event this Saturday, April 22nd from 9 am – 12 pm. The group will gather at 300 E. Comet Dr. in Pharr and invite the public to plant trees at universal estates park. ARISE group will be providing food and drinks to all volunteers.

Dia de los Libros Event – April 27 at 6 pm

The Pharr Memorial Library is hosting a Dia De Los Libros event on Thursday, April 27, 2017, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Pharr Library.  Guest authors to appear include Richard Sanchez, Jaime Perez, Santos Vallejo, Lluvia L. Avalos, Anne Estevis, and Sergio Tinoco, among others.
 
Get Financially Fit Seminar- April 27 at 10 am

The Pharr Memorial Library will be hosting a small business administration financial literacy training at 121 E. Cherokee 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2017. This seminar is for small businesses to learn how to understand credit, improve credit, and reach financial goals.
